Poker Tips - Learning to Play Draw Poker

Draw Poker is one of the oldest poker games around and is said to be what Texas Holdem was based on. The object of any Draw game is simple. To make the best 5 Card hand you can after the draws are complete. The number of draws available to you depends entirely on the game as some allow one while others allow multiple draws.

Rules for Playing Draw Poker

Draw Poker is fairly straightforward, players will pay their blinds and each player is dealt five cards which are your hole cards. The difference between draw poker games and Holdem, Stud or Omaha is that there are no community cards. Instead you will be able to select a number of cards from the five in your hand to discard and the dealer will replace those cards with new ones for you. Betting takes place in the same format with the person after the big blind always first to act and game play is in a clockwise motion.

After the first betting round is complete, a draw will take place and players will have the option to draw or “Stand Pat”. Standing Pat means you do not want to select and cards to discard. In the case of multiple draws a player who stands pat will still have the option to draw on the second round.
