Poker Tips - Learning to Play Omaha

Omaha Poker is gaining a lot of attention lately. The game may not be as common in your local card room but you can be assured that you will find Omaha at any online poker room. This page provides a general reference guide for players who want to learn how to play Omaha and Omaha Hi Lo.

Omaha is normally played in either a limit or pot limit format, however there are a few poker sites which provide No Limit Omaha such as Players Only and Carbon Poker.

Playing Omaha Poker

To begin the player immediate left to the dealer is the small blind and will begin by posting half a small bet, while the player to his left is the big blind and will post a half bet. As an example the small blind in a $1/$2 game will post $0.50 and the big blind will post $1. The dealer will then begin by dealing each player four hole cards. Players will then have an option of betting. Once all bets have come to a complete, the dealer will deal the first three cards from the top of the deck and place them on the table. These cards are known as the community cards and will be shared with every player in the hand.  Once the flop has been dealt, another round of betting will take place. Again once betting has come to a standstill, the dealer will then deal the turn card which is the 4th community, followed by another round of betting. Finally the dealer will deal the last and final card known as the river. Once this has been done, players will have the option to bet. This is the final betting round. Once betting has completed players will show their hands and the player with the best 5 card poker hand wins.

Objective to Omaha Poker

The objective to playing Omaha is similar to Holdem in that the best 5 card poker hand wins, except in this game a player must use two out of the four hole cards dealt to them and only 3 of the 5 community cards. This is the biggest mistake a beginner will make, in that they miscount their cards.

Omaha Hi Lo (aka Omaha 8 or Omaha/8)

The other half to Omaha is Omaha Hi Lo, also known as Omaha 8. Omaha Hi Lo is played just like the instructions provided above except there is the opportunity to win two pots, or share the pot. A hand can be won by having the best low hand in addition to the best high hand.
